Geylang has been traditionally home to the ethnic Malay community. The name "Geylang" comes
from the Malay word "kilang" which refers to "mill", "factory" or "press" which were found here in the early days. The Housing
Development Board has slowly developed the area, which was home to old shophouses in early 1900, into a planned residential
area. The stretch along Geylang Road and Changi Road is mainly used to develop residential area by HDB. A population of about
150,000 is served by 31,600 flats most of which are 3-room to 4-room. Of these flats 6,200 are available for rental.
The HDB Estate of Geylang has all the basic and modern amenities such as shopping malls, recreational,
educational, healthcare facilities. It is well connected with all available modes of transportation like many other planned
HDB Estates. The area is famous for local cuisines as well.

The neighboring districts of Geylang are Jalan Besar(District 8), Kallang (District 12), Katong
(District 15), Paya Lebar (District 14). The area is about 10 sq Km and located in southern part of the city.
