The Sembawang HDB Estate is situated within the Sembawang Planning Area, close to the Sembawang dockyard wharves.
Although a major port area, the Sembawang region features much of a suburban ambience. The region was once a British naval
base and had British military officers residing there. As such, high standard of amenities were made available in the area.
Since the time the naval base was developed into a commercial dockyard in 1968 and a state-owned industrial conglomerate was
formed, the region received special attention by the government of Singapore.
The development of the Sembawang HDB Estate and the Sembawang New Town were undertaken only in the middle
of 1990s. Under the development plan, various facilities had been proposed to be built. These include the Sembawang Activity
Corridor, Sembawang Bus Interchange and Sports Complex. These will enhance the lifestyle of Sembawang HDB residents. As of
now, there are about 17,874 units that house approximately 58,700 residents. The local administration of the region is managed
by the North West Community Development Council (CDC) which also promotes community bonding among the residents through various
community programmes.
