Ang Mo Kio New Town

'Ang Mo Kio' translates into 'red-haired man's bridge' in the Hokkien dialect, a reference to westerners who settled in the area during Singapore’s founding days. Although the phonetics remains the same, the rather derogatory Chinese characters have since been changed to read ‘large and prosperous bridge’ when authorities developed the area during the 1970s.

Located within the North-Eastern region, Ang Mo Kio New Town is bounded by Seletar Expressway to the north, the Central Expressway (CTE) to the east and the Central Water Catchment to the west. There are more than 54,000 housing units in Ang Mo Kio, with a population of some 280,000 residents.
 
Numerous modern facilities like landscaped gardens, amphitheatres, barbeque pits and covered walkways dot the area. Ang Mo Kio Hub, a large suburban shopping mall conveniently linked to the Ang Mo Kio MRT Station and Bus Interchange, provides residents and visitors with a wide range of products and services, bringing them greater convenience amid vibrant surroundings. Yet it’s often said that Ang Mo Kio remains one of the older estates that has retained its charming kampong (‘village’ in Malay) spirit of sharing and neighbourliness despite redevelopment.
