HDB Estate & Towns Guide

Toa Payoh New Town

Spanning 8 sq km and with an estimated 150,000 residents, Toa Payoh is one of the most populated public housing estates in Singapore and is the closest estate to the city. It has more than 36,600 flat units, with the majority 3-room followed by 4-room flats.

Toa Payoh means ‘big swamp land’ in the Hokkien dialect. Once a notorious squatter district with many of its inhabitants engaging in farming and pig-rearing activities, Toa Payoh has since experienced a massive transformation after redevelopment efforts began in 1964.

Toa Payoh New Town, HDB’s second satellite town after Queenstown, was designed as a self-contained housing estate with a town centre that serves as a focal point for the shopping and recreational needs of its residents. The commercial development, HDB Hub, located at the Toa Payoh Town Centre was completed in 2002. It is home to the Housing and Development Board’s headquarters and integrated with Singapore's first fully air-conditioned Toa Payoh Bus Interchange as well as the Toa Payoh MRT Station.

With its many cinemas, hawker centres, coffee shops, a community library and a landscaped park, this increasingly popular and bustling town is proving to be an excellent place for both residents and visitors to experience local culture.
