Bedok New Town

'Bedok' is a Malay name for the large drum that was used in the olden days to beckon Muslim worshippers to the mosques for prayers. It is in fact one of the oldest town names dating from the time of Sir Stamford Raffles.

Located in the Eastern Region of Singapore, bounded by Paya Lebar to the North, Tampines to the east, Marine Parade to the south and Geylang to the West, Bedok New Town covers an area of about 940 ha with approximately 42% under residential use. There are about 58,000 units of HDB flats with the majority of them either 3-room or 4-room. There is a fair number of industrial factories mainly in Bedok Industrial Park and Kaki Bukit Industrial Park and an estimated population of about 300,000 residents.  

Formerly a hilly region, the Bedok area was further extended under the East Coast Reclamation Scheme to create spaces for new residential, commercial and recreational facilities. Bedok Town Centre is surrounded by excellent amenities such as cinemas, supermarkets, wet markets, sports facilities, places of worship, a library and many famous eateries.

As the fifth New Town to be developed, this residential suburb offers one a glimpse of a typical Singaporean satellite town that delights in its casual and unpretentious atmosphere.
