HDB Estate & Towns Guide
Bishan New Town
Bishan New Town was known previously as Kampong San Theng, a quiet, rural area overrun with
wild plants. The area included an old cemetery called Pi Shan Ting which meant 'Pavilion on The Greens'. This name
later influenced the design of the town, which came to include colourful roofs and distinctive precinct entrances and linkways.
Built above what used to be a cemetery, there were initial fears that HDB flats in Bishan would
face poor occupancy. However those fears proved misplaced as Bishan became and remains one of the most popular towns in Singapore,
in part due to its prime location.
Centrally located in Singapore, Bishan New Town is nestled between Ang Mo Kio New Town and Toa
Payoh New Town, with close proximity to MacRitchie Reservoir. Its main transport arteries are the Central Expressway and Bishan
MRT Station.
Bishan residents can enjoy a healthy and leisurely time at the nearby 52 ha Bishan Park. Its
ponds, cycling tracks, children’s playground and lush greenery provide hours of endless of fun for families, children,
visiting picnickers and even wedding couples keen to capture the beauty of nature in their wedding pictures.
For everyday shopping convenience, residents may head towards Bishan North Shopping Mall, old shophouses lining Upper Thomson Road or Bishan Junction 8, an exciting shopping-cum-entertainment
complex located in the town centre.
