HDB Estate & Towns Guide

Bukit Merah Estate

The name “Bukit Merah” is literally translated to mean 'red hill' in Malay. The name originated from the hilly Malay kampung (village) made of red soil. The red-orange colouring is actually due to the presence of lateritic soils in the area, which makes the landscape appear 'blood soaked'. In fact, according to a Malay legend, the area obtained its name thanks to a bloody event. Back in the days when the island was a mere fishing village, the people suffered frequent swordfish attacks. A young boy proposed building a fence of banana tree trunks to ward them off. Indeed, the attacking swordfish got stuck in the tree trunks and so, the villagers won the battle against them. The Sultan, threatened by the boy’s intelligence, ordered to have him killed. The young boy’s blood then spilled down the hill and dyed the soil red.

Currently, there are 154,000 residents residing in Bukit Merah. A wide range of merchandise, food and entertainment options are available at Tiong Bahru Plaza, Valley Point Shopping Centre, HarbourFront Centre and VivoCity. Residents can also enjoy a romantic, panoramic view at the peak of Mount Faber; or party the night away at hip night spot, St. James Power Station.
