HDB Estate & Towns Guide
Choa Chu Kang New Town
The name "Choa Chu Kang" came from the Teochew word "kang chu". In the late 18th century, the
Sultan of Johor allowed Chinese immigrants to operate plantations along the river bank. These immigrants were called "kang
chu” ("kang" refers to river and "chu" refers to the clan name of the first headman in charge of the plantations.)
In the early days, Choa Chu Kang, occupied predominantly by Teochew settlers, was a rural area
with old kampongs (villages) and plantations. The old kampongs have since made way for a modern housing estate with numerous
recreational, commercial, community and industrial facilities. Like many other new towns, its various amenities are found
within close proximity to one another. Choa Chu Kang’s major shopping complex, Lot 1, bustles with activity as the focal
point of the area.
Situated at the Western Region of Singapore, Choa Chu Kang is bounded by Sungei Kadut industrial
area to the north, Choa Chu Kang Road to the south, Woodlands Road to the east and Kranji Expressway and Choa Chu Kang Way
to the west. Out of its 580 ha of land space, 52% are residential estates serving about 110,000 residents. About 3500 flat
units have been built, most of which are 4 and 5 room flats.
Besides the Choa Chu Kang and Yew Tee MRT stations, Choa Chu Kang is also accessible by the
Bukit Panjang LRT system which originates and terminates at Choa Chu Kang MRT Station, and looped through the neighbouring
Bukit Panjang New Town. With more housing sites slated to be developed near the transit stations, future home buyers can expect
improved transport convenience.
