HDB Estate & Towns Guide

Jurong East New Town

Jurong was a hilly, forested zone filled with crocodile-infested rivers and fish ponds right up until the 1960s. In 1961, an industrialisation programme was launched with Jurong selected as the site for Singapore’s first industrial estate. Hills were levelled, swamps were filled in and land was reclaimed to finally build the Jurong Industrial Estate. To attract workers to the area, a housing estate was developed, along with other amenities.

Today, both Jurong East and Jurong West are abuzz with activity. In Jurong East, crowd-pullers range from popular tourist destinations like Science Centre Singapore and Snow City, to massive shopping-cum-entertainment hubs like International Merchandise Mart (IMM) and Jurong Entertainment Centre. Several pockets of lush greenery serve as foils to the nearby industrial developments. These include the Chinese Garden, Japanese Garden, Jurong Country Club and other scenic parks. There is also a multitude of sports facilities including Jurong East Stadium, Jurong East Swimming Complex and Jurong East Sports & Cultural Centre. A new Jurong General Hospital, which will be of walking distance to the Jurong East MRT station, is expected to be ready by 2015.

Lying in the Western Region of Singapore, Jurong East is accessible via the Jurong East and Chinese Garden MRT stations. It accommodates an estimated 90,000 residents with its 23,000 units of flats, of which the majority are 4-roomers followed by 3-roomers
