HDB Estate & towns Guide

Punggol New Town

Punggol is Malay for “hurling sticks at tree branches to loosen fruits from their stems”. It also refers to a place where fruits are sold wholesale. One of the oldest settlements in Singapore, Punggol was believed to have been established years before Sir Stamford Raffles founded Singapore. Poultry and vegetable farms used to thrive in the area, but they eventually gave way to high rise flats and buildings.

In a 2007 speech, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong proposed the “Punggol 21-plus” plan to revitalize the town. According to the plan, a freshwater lake would be created to serve as a reservoir by damming up Sungei Punggol and Sungei Serangoon. Aspiring home buyers may look forward to increased waterfrontage offered at homes in this town. In addition, more water recreational facilities, parks and cycling tracks would be built, together with a projected 3000 units of flats every year. A total of 96,000 flat units have been planned for the long term.

Punggol, located at the North-Eastern region of Singapore, was famed for its seafood restaurants and boatels which have since been relocated. At present, residents can enjoy shopping convenience at Punggol Plaza, grab a bite at nearby riverside restaurants and gain access to other parts of Singapore via the Punggol MRT Station and Punggol LRT network.
