HDB Estate & Towns Guide

Serangoon New Town

Serangoon New Town is located in the North-Eastern region of Singapore. It is bounded by Sengkang New Town to the north, Toa Payoh New Town to the south, Ang Mo Kio New Town to the west and Hougang New Town to the east.

The name “Serangoon” is derived from the “Rangong” bird, a small marsh bird that was commonly found in the swamps surrounding the Serangoon River back in the early days. Up until the 1960s, Serangoon was a predominantly Chinese settlement with some Malay and Hindu inhabitants. It was populated with kampong settlements, fruit gardens and rubber plantations at the time.

After the area was redeveloped, Serangoon residents could enjoy convenient access to a variety of amenities like schools, libraries, community centres and retail outlets, particularly those at Serangoon Garden Village and Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre. A fun-filled family experience may also be had at The Singapore Crocodile Farm, which is located in the vicinity.

With the advent of the North-East Line, residents are well-connected to the downtown area via the Serangoon MRT station. And with the upcoming Circle Line completed, residents will yet again enjoy improved transport convenience.
